Macmillan Publishers Digital Lending

“Macmillan Publishers’ new model for library ebook lending will make it difficult for libraries to fulfill our central mission: ensuring access to information for all…”

                                                                                                                                                 –Wanda Brown, ALA President

In recent years, there has been an increased demand for eBooks and eAudiobooks at the Muskingum County Library System (MCLS). From 2017-2018, our digital checkouts have increased by over 20%. To meet this need, we built a strong digital collection offering the most current digital titles. Within minutes, anyone with a library card and internet connection can access thousands of current eBooks and eAudiobooks. However, Macmillan Publishers, among others, is limiting our ability to provide you with the world-class digital titles and service you deserve.

Macmillan’s new policy and how it will affect you.

Macmillan Publishers’ new policy will prevent MCLS from buying the most current titles for your digital collection. Once the titles are older and we can buy a copy for the digital collection, they are limiting the number of copies we can buy. This will increase the amount of time you will have to wait to get your new books. This includes books by popular authors like Nora Roberts, Kristen Hannah, and Liane Moriarty.

What you can do to help.

The American Library Association (ALA) and the Ohio Library Council (OLC) are both working to advocate against Macmillian’s new restrictive policy. However, you can help, too. Make your voice heard by signing the ALA petition and contacting Macmillan Publishers and expressing your objection to the new policy using the contact information below.
