Program Series:
Community Conversations about Race
In July and August 2020, the Muskingum County Library System, Nelson T. Gant Foundation, the United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan Counties, and The Muskingum County Community Foundation hosted a series of community conversations on race.
The four sessions were led by four facilitators: Anita Jackson, Danyelle Gregory, Tony Mayle, and Amy White.
Those virtual sessions spanned a total of 8 hours over 4 weeks with over 120 registered people. Each session garnered between 50-65 people who conversed for 2 hours on the following topics:
1. The History of Race Relations in the U.S. and Muskingum County
2. Race Relations in our Education System
3. Race Relations with Local Law Enforcement
4. How to Create Action Locally
How We Got Here: A Historical View of Race Relations

This session, the first in a four-part series, will focus on discussing race relations in the US and local communities, in regards to education, laws and policies, employment, and relationships.
Changing Attitudes: Education & Health
July 30, 6:30 – 8:30 PM
This session, the second in a four-part series, will focus on the role of school and health (mental and physical) in establishing a healthier community.
Changing Attitudes: The Legal & Justice System
August 6, 6:30 – 8:30 PM
This session, the third in a four-part series, will focus on the role of the legal and justice system in regards to race relations.
Moving from Words to Actions
August 13, 6:30 – 8:30 PM
This session, the last in a four-part series, will focus on public policies and relationships for ending inequality and injustice.

In light of recent events both locally and nationally, we invite our community to have thoughtful conversations about race with one another. Talking about race is hard, but it’s easier when you know where to start. We have put together a collection of resources for our community to use in your own conversations
